The Leader in You
Survival experts estimate that the average person could survive for about two days in the brutal cold and other conditions of the Andes Mountains. Nando Parrado and 16 of his friends and teammates survived for 72 days when their plane crashed in 1972. The inspiring triumphs over the series of events that would follow would reveal the true power of leadership.
“This is probably one of the most incredible leadership stories in the world,” Nando said speaking to a crowd of 12,000 at Global Rally in Dallas. “You know why? Because all the leaders died, and people who were not meant to be leaders, they had to become leaders.” This profound statement is rooted to something much deeper – everyone has the ability to determine their own fate; everyone has the ability to lead.
Nando’s story and the Forever business teaches us that leaders are made, not born. There are many people that we look up to in our lives and businesses that seem like natural leaders. These mentors, sponsors, friends and family may seem like they know the answers and that leadership comes easily to them. And, I won’t lie, it does come easier to some than others. But, in a situation like Nando’s, where all the leaders are gone in what seems like an instant, the ability of others to rise speaks to a greater truth: there is a leader in each one of us.
Each of us has the ability to make choices that can propel our lives forward. We can also choose to wait. If we wait until we feel comfortable, have all the answers or for any number of other things to align, we may never rise to our full potential or it may be too late. What may seem like plenty of time to achieve your next goal, make a change in your life or even take that vacation to a place you’ve always dreamed of, can pass by in the blink of an eye. Time passes quickly and things can change as quickly as it took that plane to crash into the Andes.
Nando Parrado ended his story at Global Rally with a profound message: “by doing what you love every single day of your life, you create your future”. Don’t wait for the right moment to be a leader, instead, create your own path. You already have the ability within you.
